The compatibility checklist behind a reliable optical link

Why the device model and firmware matter more than a brand label.

The compatibility checklist behind a reliable optical link

Compatibility is a property of a particular combination of equipment, software, port mode and interconnect. It is not established by the manufacturer name alone.

Record the endpoint identity

Capture the exact switch, router or NIC model and software version. For modular systems, include the line card and port type. Review the equipment vendor’s supported optics and release notes.

Check the electrical side

Confirm lane rate, breakout support, host power limits and FEC requirements. A mechanically compatible module can still be unsuitable for the configured port.

Check the optical side

Match optical standard, wavelength plan, fiber type, connector and polarity. Verify the receiver range and link budget against measured or specified losses.

Define acceptance

Agree on the intended firmware, stable link operation, error-counter checks and the test duration appropriate for the project. Record the tested part and hardware combination. A general product description should never be substituted for that test record.
