A useful BOM describes connections, not just product names. It should make it possible for someone outside the project to identify what each line is intended to do.
Minimum fields
For each line include a reference, equipment at end A, equipment at end B, port type, target speed, cable or fiber length, medium, connector, quantity and required date.
Separate requirements from preferences
Mark which part numbers are mandatory and which may be substituted after technical approval. List original-vendor support restrictions. Include spares separately from installed quantities.
Protect your project information
Redact credentials, internal addresses, access details and unrelated personal information. A link table usually provides enough context for an initial discussion without exposing the whole network.
Before accepting a quote
Match every proposed line back to its requirement. Confirm exact specifications, substitutions, availability, shipping arrangements and applicable warranty terms in writing.
